Clerk Jo's Updates

Upon receiving a considerable amount of residential complaints regarding solicitors (door knockers selling goods and services) I conducted detailed research on the subject. In order to better address the safety and security of all residents, I revised the Ada Township Solicitation Ordinance, which was approved and passed by our township board. The principal elements of the changes include collecting more detailed information from companies seeking a solicitation license, more rigorous regulations for solicitors to comply with and enhanced background checks for all individuals filing for solicitation permits. While the new ordinance is in effect, I ask each of you to use caution before opening your door and contact either Kent County Sheriff or our office (616-676-9191), should you have an experience with a solicitor that you leaves you feeling uncomfortable. All residential complaints are shared with our Ada Sheriff Deputies for follow up. In order for us to take action against companies who do not comply with Ada Township ordinances, we must obtain detailed reports from those who are negatively affected. Once a solicitor is approved, I provide them each with a copy of our revised ordinance, as well as a strong verbal reminder of 3 components to maintain: 1) ALWAYS have your permit badge visible, ideally clipped to a collar or shirt pocket. This badge shows company name, solicitor name and my signature for approval. The back of that badge shows their personal ID. 2) Be mindful of approved hours for solicitation, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm! 3) HOA Developments are mainly designated as "NO SOLICITATION" areas, clearly marked by signage. Be mindful of all signs of such nature and respect them.

One particular company that has recently been soliciting, has blatantly showed disregard for our ordinance, even after significant citing of rules by me. I want Ada residents (especially those of you who have called and posted complaints) to know that I have revoked their permits effective Friday, August 8, 2025. Kent County Sheriff Dept and our Ada Officers have been made aware of this revocation as well.
